CampusOS – Open System (OS) for Private (“Campus”) networks

BMWK’s flagship project CampusOS – component kit and blueprints for setting up and operating open private networks

The CampusOS flagship project aims to establish a technologically sovereign modular private (campus) network ecosystem in Germany. The focus is on open and secure wireless networks based on open wireless technologies and interoperable network components. This is intended to enable vendor independence and more competition as well as innovation in order to strengthen the digital sovereignty of companies in Germany.

Open interfaces

CampusOS is being built as an open E2E programmable 5G+ system. Thus, the campus network ecosystem extends to all major components of the network, including the radio access network (RAN), core network (Core), end-user equipment (UE), virtualized cloud computing infrastructure, and management and operations (MANO). The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) is also considered. Open solutions, such as OpenRAN, are analyzed and compared with integrated radio access solutions from established network providers. The open campus networks will then be implemented based on an extensible technology kit. This will include a component catalog and blueprints for different operator models as well as working combinations of the components.

brown-iposs considers several closely intertwined topics in the CampusOS project. With the “Heat Map”, radio field data from already active 5G clients in the 5G campus network are queried in real time, aggregated and processed for an adapted “Heat Map” of the radio propagation. In the “5G protocol analysis”, all protocol data from the physical layer to the transport layer are recorded in their course by dedicated measurement clients and fed to an AI/ML-supported protocol analysis. This enables disaggregated 5G OpenRAN campus networks to identify the reasons for non-sufficient service performance, such as disconnections or “freezing” of moving data, and use them for targeted troubleshooting. The “stream analysis” looks at service data directly in the “neutral host” and analyzes it; the results can be provided to the user, for example, by means of an app on a tablet or notebook.
